While in residence at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Dryden is teaching a semester-long course entitled Textile Painting and Dyeing for Theatrical Design. Students will have the rare opportunity to learn textile painting and dyeing techniques from two masters of the form, Deborah Dryden and guest instructor Marliss Jensen of the Guthrie Theater in Minneapolis. Using traditional and improvisational painting and dyeing methods, students will gain valuable hands-on experience transforming textiles for use in costumes and other theatrical designs.

During her residency Dryden will also design costumes for University Theatre’s production of Into the Woods, Sondheim’s popular fairy tale featuring dead giants, less-than charming princes, and a particularly ambivalent witch. A special exhibit of Dryden’s costuming work will run concurrently in the lobby of Mitchell Theatre, with an opening reception on the evening of Thursday, April 22. Dryden will also give a public lecture about her work and the process of creating costumes for the show on Sunday April 25 at 1 p.m.

This residency is sponsored by the Arts Institute, the Department of Theatre and Drama, the Art Department, Design Studies, and UW-Madison Division of Continuing Studies.
